"Whatever you are, be a good one."
- Abraham Lincoln
Elly Wray is a multi-disciplinary California-based photographer with a passion for people, and an undying love for the ocean. Elly grew up in Southern California, where being in the water was a way of life—from learning to swim at a very young age, to surfing, competitive swimming, water polo, scuba diving, freediving, and Masters Swimming, Elly has always felt most at peace near the lapping of waves.
Elly studied photography at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, earning a BFA in Art & Design with a Concentration in Photography and Digital Imaging. After graduating, she worked in various areas of the photography and design industries, gaining extensive experience not only as a photographer, but as an on-set stylist, post-production artist, videographer, and graphic designer. Common to all roles, Elly's demonstrated an intrepid dexterity and a steadfast attention to detail in taking on a variety of projects and assignments.
Yet, the ocean called... on a trip to the Cayman Islands, the path to combine two of her life's passions—photography and the sea—became immediately clear.
Elly spent nearly seven years as Photo & Video Pro (as well as Open Water Scuba Instructor) on Grand Cayman. She then earned the role of Photo Editor and Staff Photographer at Scuba Diving magazine, where she had the opportunity to shoot & travel, hone her product photography skills, and work collaboratively with magazine staff and photographers.
Elly furthered her photography résumé by then joining the team at Reef Photo & Video in the role of Events, Marketing, & Instruction, bringing her back to one of her passions—sharing her love of underwater photography with enthusiastic students.
After years of far-reaching travel, Elly now finds herself back at home in California, happy to return to her terrestrial photography roots, but eager to incorporate underwater projects whenever possible (amazing maternity shoots, anyone?!).
Got a crazy idea for a portrait session? A non-traditional family shoot? Or straight-up inspiring product photography? Elly’s your gal.
